5 Things to Consider When Choosing Unmanaged VPS

Matt HarlowBy Matt HarlowFebruary 4, 2022No Comments3 Mins Read0 Views

If your website has outgrown shared hosting or you’re about to start an ambitious project, a virtual private server might be the best option for you. While there are quite a few options, you should know that so-called self-managed versions are way more flexible. It allows you to craft a perfect virtual environment and save some money. Still, to use all perks of unmanaged VPS, consider several aspects.

1. Virtualisation

Before choosing a cheap VPS hosting provider, you should learn about available virtualisations. Obviously, it depends on the type of server. Yet, if you’re after a Windows or Linux OS VPS, seek KVM-based virtualisation. It allows broader kernel customization and enables close to physical server management features.

Looking for a so-called container or big data storage virtual space? Then, check out the options with OpenVZ-based virtualisation. This one assures isolated, secure containers and optimizes resource consumption. In other words, you get an affordable, though the highly professional server.

2. Operating System

Choosing a professional VPS host, it’s essential to consider which operating system would be more efficient in your case. Not all service providers can offer individually crafted unmanaged Windows or Linux OS-based plans. In fact, the specific operating system sometimes determines smooth server management.

If you’re after a more friendly interface, look for a familiar Windows OS. Linux virtual space is one of the most customizable options, but you must be ready to use command lines and show your programming skills. So, friendly advice – learn about the provider’s services regarding your desired OS, critically assess your skills and choose wisely.

3. Professional Hardware

Today, a website’s functioning is considered smooth only when accessible 24/7 (high uptime is unquestionable). Research how much downtime your desired provider experiences, and keep in mind that it must be minimal. Today, even a relatively cheap plan can have a world-class standards uptime, which could be as high as 99,982 percent. Also, learn how the host deals with the security of your data (virtual and physical). Check the type of hardware used and the DC it’s stored in.

4. Support

No doubt, at some point, you will need help from the service provider, especially when managing the whole process yourself. Therefore, look into provided customer support. Ideally, it is available 24/7. Another factor worth your attention could be the IT community. There you can find many valuable tips, share your experience, and look for the answers needed. In fact, it also works as proof of a high-quality, customer-oriented service.

5. Extra Add-Ons

Finally, learn about available add-ons that the hosts offer. Look over the software options they provide access to as well. It could be an additional IP address, a VPN service, or a friendly-interface control panel (for instance, cPanel licence). Since you get full root access, you can customize the environment to the maximum. Consider investing in partners who provide any tools you might need.

After considering aspects of virtualisation, OS management, downtime, security, customer support, and server add-ons, you will be able to decide which unmanaged VPS provider is the most suitable for you. Look into other services’ features, evaluate your programming skills, or discuss important questions with your IT team. Maintaining an unmanaged space can be an exciting and rewarding task when working with a trustworthy, customer-oriented service provider.
