Getting Yourself Ready To Quit Smoking Cigarettes

Matt HarlowBy Matt HarlowMay 2, 2023No Comments3 Mins Read1 Views

Quitting smoking cigarettes can be one of the most challenging things a person can do. It is not easy to quit smoking, and it requires much commitment, determination, and support from others. However, the benefits of quitting smoking are numerous, and the sooner you stop, the better.

Here are some steps to help you prepare yourself to quit smoking cigarettes:

Set A Quit Date

Setting a quit date is the first step in preparing to quit smoking. Choose a realistic date that gives you enough time to prepare yourself mentally and emotionally. Also, choose a date when you are not under much stress and are not likely to be triggered to smoke.

Identify Your Triggers

Smoking is a habit that is often associated with certain situations or emotions. Identify the triggers that make you want to smoke and plan to avoid or manage them. For example, if you usually smoke after a meal, try walking or doing something else to distract yourself.

Talk To Your Doctor

Before quitting smoking, talk to your doctor about the best way to do it and utilise their advice to help you plan. They may recommend nicotine replacement therapy or other medications that can help you manage withdrawal symptoms. Your doctor can also help you create a plan to quit smoking and support you throughout the quitting process.

Create A Support System

Quitting smoking is difficult, and having a support system can make all the difference. Talk to your family and friends about your plan to quit smoking and ask for their support. You can also join a support group or talk to a counsellor for additional help.

Prepare For Withdrawal Symptoms

Withdrawal symptoms are a common side effect of quitting smoking. These symptoms can include irritability, anxiety, and difficulty concentrating. Prepare for these symptoms by finding healthy ways to cope with them. For example, exercise, deep breathing, or meditation can help you manage withdrawal symptoms. You can also use devices to help you control nicotine cravings, such as disposable vapes and other vaping devices.

Find Alternatives To Smoking

Smoking is often a habit that is associated with certain activities, such as drinking coffee or socialising with friends. Find alternative activities that you can do instead of smoking. For example, you can drink tea or take a walk with friends.

Get Rid Of Smoking-Related Items

Removing smoking-related items, such as cigarettes, lighters, and ashtrays, can help you quit smoking. These items can be triggers that make you want to smoke, so getting rid of them can help you avoid temptation.

Change Your Environment

Changing your environment can also help you quit smoking. If you usually smoke in a certain room, try spending time in a different room. If you usually smoke at work, take breaks in a different location.

Reward Yourself

Quitting smoking is a significant achievement, and you should reward yourself for your efforts. Set milestones for yourself, such as going one week without smoking, and reward yourself when you reach those milestones. You can reward yourself with something you enjoy, such as a new book or a massage.

Stay Positive

Quitting smoking is a challenging process, and it is important to stay positive throughout the journey. Focus on the benefits of quitting smoking, such as improved health and more money in your pocket. Remember that quitting smoking is a long-term process, and it may take several attempts before you successfully stop smoking cigarettes.
